Preservation

At Voices Repository, we’re excited to embark on a journey that goes beyond traditional language documentation. Our mission is not only to preserve words but to capture the spirit, emotion, and rich cultural essence of endangered languages. Here’s a glimpse of what we’re working on:

Our Vision:
We aim to record at least 30 hours of spoken sentences for each language. This is considered a minimum for building AI models that can recognize and reproduce basic speech patterns. But we’re aiming higher—because language is so much more than just a string of words.

What Sets Us Apart:
Language is alive, full of meaning, emotion, and culture. To truly preserve this, we want to go beyond the basics:

  • Natural Conversations: We’ll be conducting studio sessions where speakers engage in real conversations. This will allow us to capture:

    • Emotional Nuance: The laughter, the pauses, the excitement, and even the silences that make dialogue real.
    • Cultural Depth: We’ll record proverbs, idioms, and expressions—things that make each language unique and often get lost in just vocabulary.
    • Contextual Use: We’re also interested in how language shifts depending on the situation—whether it’s storytelling, teaching, or expressing grief.
  • Q&A Sessions: Working alongside linguists, we’ll explore how people respond to different types of questions—ranging from factual to emotional. This will help us capture a broad range of linguistic data.

A Collaborative Effort:
We’re partnering with linguists every step of the way to make sure that we’re not only respecting the cultural significance of these languages but also capturing them accurately. This collaboration ensures:

  • Cultural Sensitivity: We approach each language with respect for its traditions and speakers.
  • Linguistic Precision: We’re committed to capturing each language’s sounds, structure, and meaning authentically.
  • Flexibility: Each language has its own needs, and we’re ready to adapt our methods to best preserve its essence.

Why It Matters:

  • Better AI: The more rich, diverse data we collect, the better AI can understand not just the words, but the way people use language in everyday life—making AI interactions more natural and culturally aware.
  • Preserving Culture: Language is more than just communication; it’s a living piece of cultural identity. By documenting how people speak, we’re preserving something that might otherwise disappear.
  • Educational Value: These recordings will be a vital resource for future generations of learners, for researchers, and for anyone dedicated to understanding and preserving these languages.

How You Can Help:

  • Support Our Efforts: Your donations will help fund the professional recording studios and compensate the speakers who are contributing their time and knowledge.
  • Volunteer Your Expertise: If you have experience in linguistics or studio work, we’d love to have you involved.
  • Spread the Word: Help us raise awareness about the importance of this project and connect us with speakers of endangered languages.

At Voices Repository, we’re not just recording words—we’re capturing the essence of human experience. Join us in preserving these languages so that they don’t just live on as text in a book, but as vibrant, living forms of communication.

Together, we can ensure these languages continue to breathe.
